Sewing Success Workshop

This workshop will cover the basic operations of the industrial straight stitch and industrial thread serger, while focusing on stitch accuracy and precision and will culminate in the completion of durable tote bag. Students will have the opportunity to experience the "hands on" nature of the program prior to arrival in September. While registration in the Sewing Success Workshop is not mandatory, admitted students are strongly encouraged to attend one of the sessions and get an early start to strengthening their sewing craft.

Course Description
Students will learn the basic operations of the industrial straight stitch and industrial three thread serger. Students will learn how to stitch accurately and with precision and will construct a 16 x 16 durable tote bag.

General Areas of Competency
Demonstrate basic operation of the industrial straight stitch and three thread serger
Analyze stitching tension on the industrial straight stitch
Stitch with accuracy and precision
Construct the basic straight seam, pressed open and with seam allowance serged together
Demonstrate safety procedures while using the industrial straight stitch and three thread serger

Schedule

DAY 1
9AM to 10AM – learn how to operate the industrial straight stitch safely, will stitch on pellon to gain confidence
10AM to 11AM – learn how to thread the industrial straight stitch and wind a bobbin, students will learn how to obtain accurate tension when stitching
11AM to 12PM – practicing stitching muslin
LUNCH BREAK
1PM to 2PM – rethread the machine, recheck tension, more practice stitching
2PM to 3PM – stitching the upper panels of the bag on black fabric.
3PM to 4PM – stitching seams –practice stitching with an accurate seam allowance on muslin and stitch the seams for the middle panel of their bag on the black fabric

DAY 2
9AM to 10AM – learn how to operate the industrial serger safely and adjust and serge straight lines on muslin
10AM to 11AM – serge the pieces needed for their bag with the black fabric
11AM to 12PM – rethread the machine and recheck the tension, then stitch the middle panel for the other side of their bag, stitching seams with accurate seam allowance
LUNCH BREAK
1PM to 4PM – assemble the panels into a bag
