« back to classes page
The Weed Identification Microcredential was designed with seasonal staff in mind and provides learners with an introduction to plant and weed identification based upon physical characteristics, biology, lifecycle and preferred environment. Additionally, strategies for the management and control of weeds and invasive plants are explored in agricultural and environmental systems using the concept of Integrated Weed Management (IWM).
The Weed Identification Microcredential is made-up of five short modules taken sequentially to refresh learners on a specific topic and to provide well-rounded training to those less familiar at recognizing and classifying invasive plants. The microcredential is delivered online in a self-directed format.

Students who complete this course will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the external morphology of plants and weeds that assist with the identification of vegetation.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of weeds' ability to adapt and thrive in a variety of environmental conditions.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of how the mechanisms of weed growth, development and dispersal aid in the success of weeds.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of and identify 20 common weeds found in western Canada based on physical characteristics and life cycles.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the Five Pillars of Integrated Weed Management and associated strategies for vegetation management.
